ACCEPTED EXHIBITION PROPOSALS INFO

Congratulations! Your exhibition proposal has been accepted! What are the next steps?

Please see the below sections that detail what we request from you as the curator, from the other exhibiting artists, along with what our team can do to assist in the exhibition process!

Note that all documents and assets described below will be shared with you from the Grad Team via google drive.

EXHIBITION GUIDELINES

The exhibition guidelines document serves as a contract for each exhibition. The contract contains all relevant information for exhibiting in the Doran Gallery, including policies and procedures related to access and space usage. All participating artists must sign the exhibition guidelines / contract and return it (digitally by email or physically to the grad office) before the first day of installation.

EXHIBITION DETAILS

The grad team creates an exhibition details document for each new Doran exhibition. This document serves as a central location  for collecting all key information related to the exhibition (exhibition statement, artist names and social media, individual artwork label information [title / date / media] for printed labels and, if applicable, web captions, etc).

GRAD TEAM SUPPORT

While the curator and exhibiting artists are responsible for the installation of the exhibition, the grad office is happy to lend our expertise if you have any questions. Additionally, we can provide the following logistical and promotional/marketing support.

  • ID Card Access for Participating ArtistsOur team will contact the office of Public Safety to arrange ID Card access to the gallery for the duration of the show (including install and deinstall days). The exhibition’s student curator / organizer will be required to provide full names of all participating students to Felicia D. Scott Flint in the grad office prior to the start of install.
  • 11×17” Exhibition PosterOur team can handle design unless the curator and/or participating artists prefer to  manage the poster (and other promotional) design; we cover printing costs [40 copies] – the curator and/or other students in the exhibition manage hanging the posters on campus.
  • MassArt Calendar EventAn exhibition event will appear on the MassArt Events Calendar and on the weekly email blast from the Marketing, sent on Mondays.
  • MassArt Calendar Event for Opening or Closing ReceptionWhile opening receptions are listed in the main MassArt calendar event, longer exhibitions and those with special programming (performance, talks) at their receptions will receive a dedicated calendar listing for the reception event.
  • Gallery LabelsThe curator and artists provide info in the exhibition details document. The grad office formats and prints the labels – The curator and/or the participating artists are responsible for hanging them in the gallery.
  • Dedicated Email AnnouncementThe Grad Office designs and generates this; curator and/or participating artists are responsible for forwarding to their own communities. This announcement is usually sent after the exhibition opens, before the opening reception.
  • Printed  large-format (36” wide) CAD poster, adhesive vinyl poster, or vinyl lettering for outside the Doran Gallerylisting exhibition title, dates, and names of participating artists. As with the exhibition poster, the grad office will manage the design unless the participants wish to handle this. Curator and other exhibiting artists may also opt to work collaboratively with the grad office on exhibition branding / promotional design.
  • Dedicated Exhibition Page on the Grad Student Resources BlogEach Doran Gallery Exhibition is listed on the “Now on View in the Doran Gallery” page of the grad resources blog for the duration of the show, and then becomes a part of the Doran Gallery Exhibition Archive (at the bottom of the gallery’s main page) after the show closes.

SPACE OVERVIEW / GUIDELINES

The Doran Gallery has approximately 1,883 square feet worth of wall space, and 628 square feet of floor space available for the installation of artwork. Stewardship of this space is the responsibility of the curator and exhibiting artists. The space will be prepared for installation day with walls patched and painted and floors swept clean. The space should be left with walls patched and floors swept clean upon the completion of deinstallation. See below for more options and guidelines available for exhibition planning at the Doran Gallery.

  • A 27 inch monitor and wall mount are available for gallery use upon request.
  • Pedestals and Plinths are available for request. Please provide the Grad Team with general pedestal measurements so that we can work with the appropriate people for accessing the all-school stock of pedestals.
  • The supply closet in the Doran Gallery holds some basic hanging hardware and tools, such as drywall screws, miscellaneous hanging hardware, a drill, some hand tools, an 8′ ladder,  and levels for use during the installation period. Please note that exhibiting artists and curators are responsible for providing specialty hanging hardware and tools for installation.
  • Moveable, free-standing walls can be placed in the gallery to increase wall space or divide the gallery where necessary. Please let the Grad Team know ahead of time to accommodate this request, as the walls are shared with groups and galleries across the MassArt Campus.
  • A scissor lift can be utilized to reach the top of the approx. 16′ tall walls for large scale hanging and installation needs. Requesting the lift requires a work order and a lift operator – please provide the Grad Team with a general requested schedule for the lift to be moved into the gallery, how long you’ll need it for install, and when the lift should be removed from the gallery. The team currently only has one person certified to operate the lift, so this will take some collaborative planning.
