ALUMNI CURATORIAL CALL FOR PROPOSALS!

Eleventh Alumni Curatorial Project at MassArt x SoWa

EXHIBITION DATES

  • Install: February 11-14, 2025
  • Exhibition: February 15 – March 23, 2025
  • First Friday: March 7 | 5-8pm
  • Deinstall: March 23 – 25, 2025

ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES
  • To be eligible to submit a proposal, you must be an alum of any MassArt graduate program (this call is not restricted by graduation date).
  • The selected alum will act as the curator and exhibition designer, with support from the MassArt x SoWa team. All exhibiting artists do not need to be MassArt-affiliated.
  • Exhibiting artists do not need to be currently living in the Boston area to participate in this exhibition, but are responsible for the shipping and delivery of work to SoWa (logistics and shipping fees in both directions), as well as deinstallation/pickup.
  • Curators and/or artists should expect to manage the majority of the exhibition physical installation and deinstallation. Each exhibition group should include at least one member who is experienced in exhibition installation.
PROPOSAL GUIDELINES

Please submit your initial proposal via this submission link (also located at the top of the page).

The submission form will ask for the following:

  • Curator(s) Information [Name + email, Year of graduation, Name of your Grad Program (i.e. MFA / SIM), Any relevant social media / web presence information (ie; instagram, website etc.)]
  • A working exhibition title (can be adjusted later in the planning process)
  • A link to your .pdf proposal. Please title your proposal document using the following convention: “MassArtxSoWa_CuratorialProposal_2025_[Your Name]”by midnight on November 3.

Proposals should be 1-2 pages (Word document, Google Doc, or fully editable .pdf), and should include the following:

  • A working exhibition title (can be adjusted later in the planning process)
  • 1-3 paragraphs about the concept, vision, and idea
  • Names, of all artists expected to participate in the exhibition
  • At least one image (jpeg, 2000px long) from each artist of the anticipated work to be shown (we know this may evolve as the exhbition takes shape)
  • Any relevant technical / logistical installation information
SHIPPING

Artists who ship work are responsible for all shipping costs in both directions. Work must be shipped with a guaranteed arrival date of Tuesday, February 11th or earlier. Work not in the gallery at this time will not be included in the exhibition. Massart x SoWa discourages the use of FedEx as a shipping service, based on past issues. The gallery suggests waiving the direct signature requirement on package deliveries to ensure timely receipt. Please include a pre-paid return shipping label in the package, and send the tracking number via email to gradprogram@massart.edu. Artists assume all shipping-related risks. Please send artwork to:

SPACE OVERVIEW / GUIDELINES
  • MassArt x SoWa is a 2100 square-foot U-shaped gallery at 460C Harrison Avenue, Suite C8. 
  • It is a flexible space with both natural light and also areas that allow for a more controlled lighting environment. 
  • Currently, installation of ceiling-mounted work requires special permission, which is dependent upon the weight of the work (the gallery can support lightweight ceiling-mounted pieces).
  • MassArt x SoWa has space designed to show media work, and has the following A/V equipment available:
    • 2 short-throw full-HD 1920×1080 Optoma projectors (ceiling-mounted)
    • 2 50” flat-screen 4K monitors with USB-A media (and HDMI) inputs
    • 2 micca media players
    • 1 Matrox Dual Head2Go Video Splitter
    • 6 sets of standard headphones
    • 2 sets of Sony noise-canceling headphones
    • 2 aux splitters
    • 2 sets passive speakers (1 set wall-mounted and connected to Optoma projector via analog amplifier; additional analog amp available for use)
    • Additional A/V equipment must be provided by the exhibiting artists. To discuss specific tech needs please contact the gallery team at MxS@massart.edu.
