Masconomet Regional School District in Topsfield, Massachusetts will be seeking an Art Department Head to start in Fall 2013. Walter (Terry) Meinelt, a MassArt alumnus, is retiring from the position he has held since 1977, and a national search will be conducted for his replacement.
The Masconomet Art Department has a national reputation for excellence. Masconomet is a grade 7 -12 school district. It consists of a middle school and high school with a combined enrollment of approximately 2100 students. Both schools are among the highest performing in the state. Excellence is expected of the students and staff at Masconomet. Approximately 20 graduating seniors matriculate at the country’s most highly regarded art schools each year.
There is an art teaching staff of eight shared between the middle and high schools and an outstanding budget for consumable and durable supplies. They offer daily trimester classes in art in the 7th and 8th grades and a full range of sequential and elective courses in the high school culminating in Advanced Placement Studio Art and Art History. The district is made up of there towns—Boxford, Middleton and Topsfield. The 12-year old campus is located directly off Route Interstate 95, just 23 miles north of Boston.
The twelve department heads at Masconomet are considered the curricular leaders of the school and hold professional contracts that are separate from the teachers’ union. They answer to the two school principals and the district superintendent. They work 191 days per year; are compensated at a highly competitive rate; and have a range of professional responsibilities which can be seen in the attached Job Description.
