REE MORTON AT THE ICA LA

I visited the ICA LA (formerly the Santa Monica Museum) in downtown LA for the first time to see the Ree Morton show. The show had been at the ICA in Philadelphia, and I had wanted to see it then but unfortunately I missed it. At my delight it traveled to LA. For those of you who aren’t aware of her work, here’s some basic background.

She is considered an Artist’s Artist. I particularly enjoyed this show, an early work particularly resonated with me. They are the ‘Wood Drawings’ from 1971. As a lot of her work is cross disciplinary by nature ( use of materials). These in particular feel cross disciplinary not just by nature ( making drawing with wood) but by gesture… what is a ‘drawing”? I believe in this body of work it is the simple gesture, the cuts, compositions, arrangements, simplicity and delicacy.

I like when art questions what it is implicitly and Ree Morton’s Art does that continually.
