Project Proposal: Bill Lanigan

CONCEPT/SUBJECT

Deciding on a project proved more difficult than I would have thought. I ran thru numerous ideas looking to use some of the knowledge I’ve gained in the last few weeks with an eye to try a few new techniques. My project will be observational with the goal consisting of photos of ocean waves. This will include both some rocky shoreline and beach photos taken at various times of the day. The goal is to force myself to become acquainted with the use of a tripod and to utilize the full range of the camera’s settings.

TECHNICAL APPROACH (INPUT)

I intended to shoot some of the photos utilizing a tripod. The camera is a Nikon 5600 with a Tamron 16-300mm F/3.5-6.3 lens. I may purchase a remote timer. The methods will include both slow and fast shutter speeds. The slow shutter aims to capture dream-like waves with the goal of the fast shutter aiming to capture a moment. The idea is to be able to use the camera’s settings to take the best possible photos given the day’s conditions.

TECHNICAL APPROACH

Given the limited palette of waves/beach scenes, I’ve not yet decided whether to develop the photos in color or black & white. Owning a printer, I do plan to print some of the photos. In general, I think larger prints of nature produce a superior product as they seem to envelop you within the photo. However, the printer available to me is not able to produce the large scale I’m aiming for. The images are for my own use and will not be publicly shown.

  1. Hi Bill!

I think it’s great that you are using this final project opportunity to challenge yourself and to master the use of a tripod. And personally, I always love ocean scenes, so I look forward to seeing your final series of images. Capturing a variety of angles of the ocean at different times of day will be interesting to view through your lens and perspective.

Will all photos be taken at the same beach?

There’s an artist on Nantucket who I think captures waves so beautifully—especially his “Slurpee Waves” which freeze in the winter. Maybe you already know his work, but here’s a link to some inspiration if you would like to take a peek! https://www.jdnphotography.com/samuel-owen-gallery/.

Hope you enjoy spending time by the coast while capturing your images!

  2. Hi Bill,

I love the idea of taking pictures by the ocean and at various times of the day. I know for me there is something really relaxing and almost grounding about being by the ocean especially during early morning or evening. I also think that reaching out and starting to use a tripod is a great idea!

Good luck and can’t wait to see the final results!

  3. Hi Bill,
I love your idea, and i like that you have choosen a challenge. Actually i think the idea to take photos of the ocean is fantastic because we can play with the sea in order to can observe the movement of the waves coming and going through a photo, as well as a frozen wave… it will look like different sea, i’m pretty sure!!
