Artward Bound Mentors

Artward Bound is a four-year college access program in the visual arts on the MassArt campus. Our current cohort are 9th and 10th graders, who attend the program after school to work on projects that enhance their artistic, academic, and life skills needed for admission to and success at an art/design college or other post-secondary institution.

This spring  students will curate their own art show. They will come up with a theme that is relevant to them, and then will create work in response to that theme. Opportunities for Artward Bound youth to meet with MassArt students for discussions of ideas and critiques on works in progress will help students achieve their goal of having a great art show.

Timeline for mentorship opportunities:

Wednesday February 27th and Thursday February 28th: AB students discuss their ideas about what they plan to make in response to the art show theme, and figure out what projects might lead to an effective show.

Wednesday March 6th and Thursday March 7th: Critique on Project #1 that they have made in response to Art show theme.

Monday March 25th and Tuesday March 26th:  Critique on Project #2 that they have made in response to Art show theme.

Monday April 8th and Tuesday March 9th:  Critique on Project #3 that they have made in response to Art show theme.

Monday May 13th and Tuesday May 14th: Writing workshop about the body of work they have created for this art show.

May 24-31: exhibition on view in the Student Life gallery. Reception is planned for May 30th from 6-8.

Schedule:
All meeting times are from 5:00-6:00.  Artward Bound students attend the program on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays. Therefore it is preferable for volunteers to come on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays so that they will be more likely to work with the same students over time.

This is an unpaid mentorship experience that can be counted towards observation hours.
