Visual Arts Consultant / Sociedad Latina

Sociedad Latina is now hiring a Visual Arts consultant to run its whole-brain learning activities during our afterschool program.  The activities will be with groups of 10-15 children, teaching them the basics of your expertise. We are hoping that students will work crafting different art projects through artistic expression including drawing and painting. The activities run two times per week, Monday and Wednesday from 4:15-5:30 starting September 23 and it will run for nine weeks ending December 5.  Sociedad Latina is located in the Mission Hill area of Roxbury, MA.

For over thirty years the mission of Sociedad Latina has been to enhance the overall health and well-being of the Latino community by delivering programs that encourage community leadership through educational attainment, cultural identity and continuation of traditions.  Sociedad Latina is now dedicated to serving both Latino youth, the fastest growing youth population in Massachusetts, and youth from the surrounding communities of the Greater Boston Area.  Today our vital Mission Enrichment Program (MEP) offers creative exploration opportunities connecting academic skill-building to activities ranging from graphic design to martial arts to gardening during the afterschool hours.  The Mission Enrichment Program is a safe and fun place for students in grades 6-8 to learn and grow through actively participating in diverse new and engaging experiences.

In addition to the following qualifications and duties a consultant should have specific skills knowledge in their subject matter.

Consultants will have the following qualifications:

  • Experience working with groups of children.
  • Experience planning and implementing activities with children.
  • Experience creating a final project/presentation with children.
  • Familiarity with BPS Standards and Massachusetts Frameworks
  • Ability to supervise groups of children and enforce behavior management when necessary.
  • Sensitivity to and/or experience working with children and adults from diverse cultural and economical backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with and supervise teen Youth and College Leaders.

Consultants will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Curriculum development, including researching, planning and implementing daily activities.
  • Teaching the curriculum while incorporating academic literacy skills.
  • Identifying observable and measurable outcomes for both the individual lessons along with the entire program session.
  • Ability to track the outcomes to see which students are meeting the standards
  • Guiding group to produce a final project and participating in the presentation of project.
  • Incorporating and implementing means of evaluation to assess success of program and skills gained by participants.
  • Building an atmosphere within the group that fosters positive values and encourages children to take positive risks.
  • Leading large and small group activities, including leading groups in discussion as well as instructing groups in various concepts relating to the subject.
  • Set up and clean up of space and materials each day.
  • Following through with behavior management when necessary and in accordance with program policy.

Salary:

$20 an hour, total for the nine weeks is $400

  • Educator/teacher/coach
  • Camp counselor/instructor
  • After school program teacher
  • Nanny or childcare provider
  • Student working towards a degree in a related field.
