GONGYI GU
Comes the Dawn
Using stark, dramatic lighting in our tiny studio apartment, Comes the Dawn reproduces scenes from my first year of marriage. My wife Becky and I navigate the struggles of a new relationship at a time when the world feels like it’s coming apart at the seams. It hasn’t been easy but it has brought us together. We both come from backgrounds where a lot has been repressed and left unsaid, but the current crisis has forced us to see one another with a close up and unflinching gaze that is not always comfortable.
GONGYI GU is a lens-based artist from Shanghai, China. He holds a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering and Mathematics from Merrimack College and is a recent graduate of the Post-Baccalaureate Photography program at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. In his current work, he investigates the relationship between couples impacted by society and family through his own experiments.
