Leslie – I really enjoy the radial quality in your object images, it is almost unbelievable to me that they are of the same object so I think the perspectives you chose were really successful.
Having a single point of focus in your portraits is a really interesting take on this assignment and the detail you managed to capture of the man’s face is unreal!
Bill – The way you shot the horse creates a real tension for the viewers. I absolutely love that you decided to think out of the box and capture what appears to be the shadow of the object. I would even consider bringing the entire shadow in view rather than just slightly cutting it off!
From your portraits I got a sense of stability and power especially in the image with vertical, horizontal and diagonal leading lines towards the subject.
MaryAlice – I think you managed to capture the different textures in all your images really well, they really stand out especially because of the black and white conversion. I also noticed how clearly you considered changing distance in each of your portraits!
Marie – I absolutely love the stark contrast present in your portraits, they look like a part of a bigger series. In the second image, I really appreciate how well you managed to capture the water frozen in a moment.
Also, the second image of your object is really successful because it shows a range of whites, mid-tones and blacks. Having the structure at an angle definitely makes me want to spend longer figuring out all its details.
Laura – Your self-portraits have an almost performance-like feel to them. The first two portraits are really beautiful because of how much you stand out against the white walls, I would even consider adding more sharpening to the images on Lightroom and balance it with noise reduction to keep the smooth feeling!
I associated your images of the violin as film stills. The first image especially really captures the elegance of the instrument!
Raina- Your portraits have an ease and seductiveness that make me want to linger on the photos. I especially love the expression on your subject’s face in the first photo; it reflects the languid pose of his body. It’s such a well composed image and my favorite of the portraits; both of which feel of another time/era probably enhanced by the black and white conversion. I was really surprised how strong the images are in B/W because I did get a glance of these when you were working in the lab and the colors were so rich and vibrant.
I’m also drawn to your image of the shoes shot through the acrylic table. The B/W and the patterns on the floor make for a strong graphic statement.
Raina, your work is beautiful, we miss you and hope you are safe and well in India…these are difficult times.
Dear Raina,
I am so sorry your freshman year at MassArt has been cut short so abruptly. We miss you!
I love your PoV portfolio. Your images remind me of Guy Bourdin. He was a French fashion photographer best known for his work of the 70’s and 80’s. Like yours, his work is very graphic, very dynamic, very colorful (which of course I can’t really say about your B&W images, but I know you showed bold color previously). Your portraits here are of a piece with your earlier ones. The shoes are a terrific subject. I can see there is a distinctive “Raina signature” already!
Best,
Marie
Hi Raina,
It must be so hard to be so far away from school and friends and your classes. I hope you and your family are well, we miss you in class.
I enjoyed seeing you PoV photos, having them all in black and white – not your usual vibrant color – made me focus more on your wonderful composition. You have a confident photographic voice. The way you framed both of your portraits give them a strong emotional element and I just love the shoes with the shadow on the floor, beautiful.
Best, Leslie
This collection of point of view photos is really beautiful, and I think the images all look strong processed in black and white. The two images featuring people make for a beautiful duo that feels as if the images are talking together. I’m especially impressed with the three photos featuring the pair of shoes and think those three pair really well as a triptych together. I’m inspired by the design elements you capture in these images. I appreciate that in two images, the subject has a direct focus, while in the third, we see a very close up, artistic, and mysterious capture of the shoe. As we chatted about in class last week, your work is beautifully editorial. I think all of these images would work really well on a magazine spread together—they have power and strong composition.
I absolutely love this collection of point of view photos! They all tie into one another really nicely and I am really impressed that you shot these on your phone as well as processed them there! Great composition and I cant wait to see more in your final project! We miss you and stay safe!
