Philip Gedarovich – DMI

  1. Greetings guys,

A bit of a late post from me, but I’ve been out of the country the past week and happened to be violently ill when I got back this past Sunday. I’m just now getting around to feeling normal and functional. So as you can imagine I don’t have a huge amount of updates on my end, but certainly do have some things I can share.

The process for the upcoming Fresh Media show next Spring actually got underway a few weeks before the semester began. One of the galleries which DMI showcased work at last Spring, the CyberArts Gallery in JP, is a potential option for the show next year. I am co-curating the show with another DMI student, Anne Sisto. We reached out to CyberArts regarding next years show, and I will be meeting with the curators their this coming weekend to discuss that possibility. Do to the nature of the work done by DMI students, which is heavily focused on prototyping, DIY crafting, research and development, reflection, and revising, the work displayed in the gallery last Spring was not necessarily all “Gallery ready” so to speak. This is a major concern for CyberArts, and one which may be the crucial factor as to whether or not we show their next year. Anne and I are looking into other spaces and options, such as only having the show for one weekend vs. multiple weeks.

Regarding fundraising, we have an Indigogo campaign in the works which I actually developed last year, but decided to not go live with because we ended up getting corporate sponsorship in the end. Anne’s friend works for a production studio which was nice enough to make a short video piece about the show, totally pro-bono, which we will be using on the campaign to promote next year’s show. Totally awesome. Once the campaign is live, I will be sure to share the link. We’re shooting for early October.

On the MassArt side of things, I reached out to Laura Flynn since I was unable to attend class last week. She connected me with Claudia LeClair who is the Manager of College and Visiting Events, but neither of them have been very forthcoming regarding meeting with me to discuss the process for events at MassArt or ways in which MassArt can contribute funding to DMI. Laura did however inform me that we could not receive any funding from SGA, as that fund does not support graduate programs unfortunately.

  2. I had to approve your post before it could be live – we can talk about the missed class content on the phone during our meeting – but i would keep trying to meet with Claudia.. she might point you in some useful directions. however her focus is definitely on campus events. re funding. can’t you some from DMI? I think MassArt is going to be slow in offering much help outside of your dept. but looking forward to talking more.

  3. Agreed, comment fields should be wider. This has something to do with the CSS. Maybe Greg can help?

Just want to get down a few updates that I had shared with you during our phone conversation to recap everything.

CyberArts has decided to host the show again next Spring. Dates we are shooting for are April 18-26. I’m in the process of reworking my proposal somewhat, and will send off to George Fifield soon.

The Grad Office has offered to provide us with $500, mainly for marketing/promotional expenses. Leah Gadd is our contact in the Grad Office. We may still have some additional funds leftover from the last show in the MassArt Foundation. I’ve been put in touch with Lynn Tibbets regarding this. More on that in the coming days.

We will most likely look towards corporate sponsorship for the remaining funds related to putting the show together, around $1000. Additional funding for individual student works and materials will probably be pursued via an Indeigogo campaign, which we have tons of material for, just need to update a few things and we’re waiting on a promotional piece of video from Weymouth Design. I will be talking with folks at Continuum next week and try to figure out ASAP if they might be able to provide us with the entire $1000, or at least a portion of it.

Committees are in the process of being finalized, I should know who will be a part of which committee by hopefully the end of the week, and will update the affiliated document.

    cheers,
    Phil
