Don't Quit Your Day Job

Don’t Quit Your Day Job: Artwork from Local Day Programs for Adults with Disabilities
Arnheim Gallery
September 19 to October 7, 2011.
Reception:   September 21, 5 to 7pm.
Gallery talk:  Wednesday October 5, 5:30pm

The work is from Gateway Arts, Outside the Lines and Webster House, three unique facilities where artists with various disabilities create work on a vocational basis. These programs are valuable not only for the vocational opportunities afforded to the participants, but in the aesthetic opportunities afforded to the work. Rather than focusing primarily on craft or technique, the programs encourage participants to create the type of work that interests them, working with, rather than against, each artist’s particular abilities and limitations. The resulting work is diverse, accessible and engaging.

River Cortes (MSAE 2002) curated this show.

Majors Orientation Day September 7

Dear Art Education Students:

Welcome back to MassArt. I am looking forward to another great year working, making, and teaching with you. All of the faculty and staff eagerly anticipate another year filled with new discoveries, challenges, opportunities and learning.

We’ll be gathering in the Arnheim Gallery as a department on Wednesday, September 7th, from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon for our majors orientation. All students need to attend unless you are presently in an internship. Students new to the department will be introduced to faculty and staff. All of you will get a chance to get to learn more about each other and your faculty. If you’re in a Portfolio section, you’ll be assigned your studio space. And, you’ll get a free lunch!

See you in a few days.

Best regards,

Dan Serig, Ed.D.
Chair and Associate Professor of Art Education

Artist Educator in Residence

Joe Fusaro will be an Artist/Educator in Residence in our department April 19-21st and will be visiting classes and studios and giving a presentation. He is the Senior Education Advisor for Art21 and will model how to use Art21 films in guided discussions.

Lois Hetland says, “Joe is a brilliant facilitator of classroom conversations. He exemplifies the artist-teacher model that we espouse in Art Ed. He’ll teach us a lot about how to work as a practicing exhibiting artist while teaching in a full-time context and maintaining a global presence through blogs, films, and consulting.”

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to meet this teacher’s teacher!
