Congratulations!

Ariel Rosenblum, Art Education major, was chosen for a  Summer 2008 $3,000 Unpaid Internship Award
Ariel  (Art Ed/Fibers, ’09) will be an intern at Gateway Arts, in Brookline, MA.

Gateway Arts is a unique non-profit organization that empowers adults who have developmental disabilities, head injuries, visual and hearing impairments, and psychiatric disorders. Gateway’s Studio Program, Crafts Store and Gallery enable these adults to make a professional living as artists. Ariel will be assisting artists who have various
disabilities in the studio and will give support to teachers when needed. She will learn how the teachers facilitate the studio spaces and specifically how they help the artists overcome challenges and grow. Ariel found her internship from “word of mouth and the internet.”

BorderLinks Border Studies Travel Seminar for Educators August 13-17, 2008

The Border Studies Seminar for Educators will bring together educators – professors, teachers, students of education, education administrators, and religious educators – from all around the U.S. to participate in a BorderLinks travel seminar along the border. This seminar provides a platform for educators to see, experience, discuss and reflect on border issues with colleagues in the field of education. Join fellow education professionals in exploring the complexities of the U.S./Mexico border through a joint analysis of the following core themes: immigration policy and law, human rights and labor conditions, migration, global economics and the implications of NAFTA, international politics and U.S./ Mexico relations, drug and human smuggling, border militarization and security, community organizing, education and social services.

Expect to meet with individuals along the border including academics, human rights activists, labor organizers, government officials, community leaders, immigration specialists, public defenders, border artists and migrants. Potential visits include maquilas (foreign-owned assembly plants), migrant shelters, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, a micro-credit institution and local humanitarian aid organizations. In addition to structured visits, participants will have the opportunity to stay with host families in Nogales and engage with local community members along the border.

Deborah Is Going on Vacation

deborahforweb.jpgTo the Art Education Community:

Now that we’ve all worked hard, celebrated the achievements of our graduates, and brought the academic year to a close, it is time for me to go on vacation!

The office will be closed from June 16th to July 11th while I am on vacation.  I’ll be back on July 14th, just in time for the start of our summer MSAE session.

I hope you all have a restful summer, and I wish all the job-seeking graduates the best of luck.

Throw Pies for Art Supplies

johngwithpie.jpg A Contribution from Emily Brozyna:

In early May in the courtyard a  fundraiser took place in which donors bought tickets to "pie" Residence Life staff members.    The funds raised bought art supplies for the Roxbury Tenants of Harvard’s after-school program.

Emily worked on this project all semester.

Here we see John Giordano about to throw pies in the students’ faces!

Thank you, Emily, for these unique photos and for your work on this community project.
