Faculty Grant Award

loishetlandatceremonysmallsize.jpgCongratulations to Lois Hetland who, with research partners Lynn Goldsmith and Ellen Winner, has been awarded a major National Science Foundation grant.  

The project, entitled "Can Visual Arts Learning Improve Geometric Reasoning? A Transfer Study," is under Lois’s direction.

Lois is both Associate Professor in the Art Education Department and a Research Associate at Project Zero at Harvard Graduate School of  Education.

Jim Chisholm

Jim Chisholm (MSAE 1995) is Associate Professor of Art and Design at North Shore Community College and was recently granted tenure.   He teaches art history and appreciation, basic drawing, and visual design theory.  Jim also teaches painting and drawing at the Peabody-Essex Museum in Salem, the Museum of Fine Arts, and Harvard Extension School.  In May 2004 he received a citation and award from Harvard Extension School for 25+ years of service.

Jim, a Salem resident,  continues to show his work at galleries on the North Shore, most recently the Erlich Gallery in Marblehead.

 North Shore Community College purchased eight of his paintings, including the two below.  Several  of Jim’s paintings hang  in the President’s Office at NSCC.

Printmaking Weekend at Monhegan Island

Monhegan Island Experience
October 4,5,6

MSAE alum Mardi Reed will be offering a trip to Monhegan Island, where she will lead walks and printmaking workshops.  Monhegan is 20 miles off the coast of Maine and has 15 miles of hiking trails. 

Mardi says "The studio has a lovely view of the water with a wrap around deck and path to the rocks.  I will lead walks in the morning and support you in developing your process and introduce printmaking techniques each afternoon."  Deadman’s Cove (left)  is the view from the front of the studio.

 Schedule:    9:30-11:00    hike
                        1:00-4:00      print and paint at the Curator Studio

Cost:              $65 a day or $150 for three days

A Message from the Outgoing Chair

 

 A Message from Maureen Kelly 

Hello and almost welcome back to all our students in the Art Education Department! I wish you an upcoming academic year full of challenge, opportunity and accomplishment. And I wanted to let you know of several staffing changes within the department that will soon take effect.

 Beginning on Wednesday the 20th of August, faculty member Dan Serig will take over as Art Education Chair. This is Dan’s fourth year at the college, and he has served as Graduate Program Coordinator for the last three. Dan came to us from his doctoral program at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. He brings expertise in both teaching and art making. I am sure you will enjoy working with him. His office is in South 107, really next to Deborah in South 106 if the wall was not there!
