Five Minds for the Future
Thursday, May 3
5:30-7:00 pm
Askwith Lecture Hall, Longfellow Hall
Harvard University
Appian Way, Cambridge
Howard Gardner, John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education, will speak about his new book, Five Minds for the Future. He will explain why, in the future, it will be important to develop five kinds of minds, both in school and in other educational environments: the disciplined mind, the synthesizing mind, the creating mind, the respectful mind, and the ethical mind. While individuals may differ in their strengths and proclivities, optimally each person will develop the full complement of minds. Gardner will discuss the developmental sequence of these kinds of minds, and the ways in which they may conflict with, or complement one another.
Book sales and a signing will be held just before and after the forum.
Robert Schwartz, Academic Dean, will provide an introduction. Following the lecture, he will present the Singer Prizes for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching.
This lecture is free and open to the general public. Seating is available on a first-come,
first-served basis. Tickets are not necessary, unless otherwise noted. For information, contact Shawn Wade Tuttle at tuttlesh@gse.harvard.edu.
