A Message from Maureen Kelly
Hello and almost welcome back to all our students in the Art Education Department! I wish you an upcoming academic year full of challenge, opportunity and accomplishment. And I wanted to let you know of several staffing changes within the department that will soon take effect.
Beginning on Wednesday the 20th of August, faculty member Dan Serig will take over as Art Education Chair. This is Dan’s fourth year at the college, and he has served as Graduate Program Coordinator for the last three. Dan came to us from his doctoral program at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. He brings expertise in both teaching and art making. I am sure you will enjoy working with him. His office is in South 107, really next to Deborah in South 106 if the wall was not there! His contact info is: 617-879-7 549 or dan.serig@massart.edu.
Given that Dan will be taking on the Chair responsibilities we needed someone else to serve as Graduate Program Coordinator. Steve Locke has enthusiastically agreed to take on this leadership role. Steve will be full time with us this year after a whirlwind leave from Massart during the spring semester of 2008. Steve was a Visiting Artist at Savannah College of Art and Design and received a travel award to study / work in Istanbul this past spring! Steve has an MFA from Massart. I am certain you will learn and grow from his expertise. Steve may be reached at 617-879- 7529 or steve.locke@massart.edu. Steve is also relocating to South 200, the former office of Trintje, Dave Ardito and Kristen Mills.
After 5 years of serving as Art Education Chair, I want to acknowledge the many many folks, students, staff and faculty, in our Department and throughout the college, who helped us envision and achieve our goals. Curricular changes in all our programs, undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and graduate, resulted in a shift in departmental culture that prioritized both pedagogy and studio work. And from there lots of other changes unfolded in terms of community building, program growth, professional affiliations, and so much more. I want to thank each of you for your sincere and honest engagement in our work and to let you know what an honor it has been to serve as your Chair! It turned out to be a terrific learning opportunity, and I really loved meeting with so many of you and understanding / helping your next steps. Best wishes and thank you!
With great fondness,
Maureen
