Stella Aguirre McGregor: The Urbano Project
Distinguished Educator of the Year
Arnheim Gallery
September 9 – 22, 2012
Opening reception: Wednesday September 12, 5:00-7:00 pm
The Urbano Project empowers urban teens and professional artists to create social change through participatory works of contemporary art and performance.
“Our work is based in collaboration, risk-taking, and border crossing, the essential foundations of creative thinking. We challenge teen artists to carry what they learn at Urbano beyond our space, thinking about the boundaries of art and lived experience, and the ways in which artistic intervention can spark and reshape public discourse.”
This retrospective exhibition includes work by Urbano’s teens in collaboration with adult artists from 2010 – 2012. Projects include live performance (during the exhibition opening on the evening of September 12 th), documentation of site-specific public art works, sculptural installations, and collaborations with internationally recognized artists such as Pedro Reyes.
Seventy-two teen artists (four of whom are currently MassArt undergraduates) participated in the creation of works on display, working with eleven professional artists and performers based in Boston and beyond.
