Hello, everyone! Lois here, welcoming you back to the start of the 2012-2013 academic year. The place feels lonely without you, so we’re eagerly awaiting your arrival next week. Orientation is Wednesday (details below), and classes start Thursday.
Personnel News:
I’ve taken on the role of Department Chair and moved my office down to the first floor (South 107B). I look forward to checking in with all of you to hear about your summers and help you get started this year. If you’d like to stop by for a chat, please contact Deborah Simmerman, who is keeping my schedule for office hours this year.
We have a new faculty member, Professor Laura Reeder! Please welcome her when you see her around the halls or in her office, South 205A (where I used to be). Laura is taking on the leadership of Saturday Studios and teaching an MAT section of Art and Human Development. We all feel thrilled and lucky that she’s here and know you’ll feel the same as you get to know her.
Professors Dan Serig and Jen Hall are both away on sabbatical this fall, and Jen is away for the entire year. We’re missing them already, but never fear, they’ll return, no doubt with great stories. Returning this fall are the rest of us: Professors Steve Locke, Adriana Katzew, Aimee DeBose, Beth Balliro, Deborah Simmerman, Kyle Brock, Dr. Johnny Crowe (back half-time, as he has been for awhile), and me.
Orientation:
On Wednesday, September 5, we are holding our annual department orientation in the Arnheim Gallery on South first floor. All Sophomores, new TPPs and MATs, and transfer students are required to attend, so please email me if you cannot make it (lhetland@massart.edu). Upperclass-folk, we urge you to come, too, since it’s our kick-off to building our department community this year. Students in portfolio classes wishing to have a studio for the semester need to attend orientation and meet with Kyle to review and sign the studio contract. And we’re serving pizza from Penguins for lunch! We begin at 9:00 am and conclude at 11:30 am. You’ll also hear from your peers what it’s like to be in the department, be introduced to Laura Reeder, reintroduced to the rest of the faculty and staff, get updates on the MTEL from Mary Ann Oldfield, and meet with your advisors (it would be great to see some juniors and seniors in the advisor groups!). Please let me know if you have questions – otherwise, see you Wednesday! We can’t wait to hear about your summers.
