Position Description
The Program Director for the Visual Arts provides district-wide leadership and support to schools in the following areas to ensure high-quality arts instruction in Visual and Media Arts. Aligned with Superintendent Johnson’s Acceleration Agenda the Program Director will implement Citywide Learning Standards, professional development, assessment, and instructional materials selection and management. The Program Director also works to identify and sustain funding of programs through grants and other funding opportunities. The Program Director reports to the BPS Executive Director for the Arts, and works collaboratively with the Program Director for Performing Arts, Arts Partnership Manager and other members of the BPS Arts Department.

This position shares supervisory responsibilities for the Arts Technicians, Collaborating Arts Teachers (CATs), the school based Arts Liaisons, assigned student teachers and department interns.

Position Responsibilities

Curriculum & Instruction Support:
– Support and monitor the implementation of the Citywide Learning Standards in individual schools and across the district.
– Manage ongoing development of curriculum and assessment tools
– Assist teachers in developing yearly goals and objectives, planning, resource development and
evaluation
– In-school observation of arts teachers, work with principals/headmasters and Executive Director for the Arts on teacher effectiveness/review
– Develop and implement a district-wide policy and program for student teaching in the arts that is rooted in the problems and possibilities of practice for urban arts teachers.
– Working with Arts Partnership Manager evaluate effectiveness of in-school arts partners

Professional and Program Development:
– Develop, implement and evaluate effective, year-round, citywide and school-based professional development program for music, theater and dance teachers
– Collaborate with local universities and community based programs and other internal departments to support the ongoing development, implementation and evaluation of workshops courses, institutes and other professional development opportunities
– Monitor the effectiveness of performing art programs citywide, in partnership with the Executive Director for the Arts

Resource Management – Instructional Materials & Instruments:
– Coordinate the identification and adoption of high-quality instructional materials citywide.
– Develop and manage resources that support and enhance arts learning:
a) BPS Arts eNews which communicates arts education opportunities to BPS staff, families, and the greater community
b) BPS arts website content about district policies and procedures c) District-wide
arts events which outreach to the community

Festivals & Student Performances
– Oversee the organization and implementation of the annual Visual Arts Festival
– Supervise and/or manage student showcasing and enrichment activities, including, but not limited to the annual arts festival; the districts annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration; the Summer Music Immersion program; and the Mosaic camp for middle school girls.
– Perform other related duties as requested by the Executive Director for the Arts including
– Represent the BPS Arts Department at district meetings (i.e. Curriculum & Instruction team),
programming meetings and events, school functions, and community arts events.
– Represent the BPS Arts Department at local and national conferences directly related to performing arts curriculum, instruction and assessment.
-Prepare and submit administrative documents, including, but not limited to weekly activity reports, periodic program reports, and supporting information for grant reports.

Qualifications:
– Bachelors degree and certification in related arts disciplines
– Demonstrated experience and expertise as an art teacher and administrator
– Strong communication skills; verbal written and presentation
– Demonstrated success working with teachers and/or administrators in a leadership and professional development capacity
– Demonstrated success collaborating with external agencies on the implementation of program and professional development initiatives
– Proficiency in MS Office; Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, effective use of technological tools for research and communication
– Ability to work evenings on special projects/attend gatherings as related to responsibilities
– Current authorization to work in the United States – Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

Preferred Qualifications  (in addition to the above qualifications):
– Advanced degree in related arts discipline or administration
– Successful experience working in an urban setting
– Strong background in instructional and management technology
