Multiple Art Teacher Positions in New Bedford

There will be multiple elementary, middle and high school art positions in the New Bedford Public Schools due to increased arts funding and retirements in the department.

Descriptions of positions and application information can be found on the School Spring website: http://www.schoolspring.com/    Interested educators should apply through this website.

Interviews will begin in the next two weeks, so interested applicants should submit materials immediately.  Massachusetts certification is a requirement, but they may interview applicants who have pending certification or have current certification in another state that has reciprocity with Massachusetts. Some of the basic requirements are as follows:

  • Very strong skills in the art form and in teaching are a must. (See job specific descriptions)
  • Experience with and an interest in working in an urban environment is important.
  • Interpersonal and organizational skills and building rapport with students, colleagues and parents are necessary.
  • Multi-lingual capabilities are a plus.

Some positions are itinerant at multiple schools while others are school based and may have additional requirements. For example NBHS positions may have extracurricular expectations with stipends. Another example:  the Parker Elementary positions have an expanded school day/year and teachers will be compensated accordingly.

Here is the description of the department provided by the Director of Fine Arts:

“The NBPS Fine Arts Department is a vibrant community of over 50 educators in the visual and performing arts spanning 27 schools in the district. Our students participate in over 160 school based, community and travel events per year. We enjoy community support as an integral part of our ‘arts and culture’ city. There are many opportunities for teachers to be involved both during and after school through our school based and “All-City” programs. Dynamic arts educators who are interested in making a difference in the lives of urban children should apply for our open positions.”
