Every year, drinking affects college students and can lead to a number of consequences including injuries, sexual abuse and assault, academic problems, health issues, general assaults, and even death.

Students
Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) is a 2-session meeting with a counselor, right here in the Counseling and Wellness Center. Even if you were mandated to take the course, your counselor is only there to assess your alcohol use and help you create strategies to decrease any consequences from alcohol use. This is not a “lecture,” but a way to equip you with useful skills to make sure you enjoy yourself in a safe way. Plus, anyone can take this course–you do not need to be mandated!
What to Expect
- Takes place in the Counseling and Wellness Center (2nd floor in Kennedy)
- Consists of two sessions (with the same counselor), two-to-four weeks apart, which last 60-90 minutes.
- All sessions are one-on-one between the student and a trained BASICS facilitator
- Session 1 assesses the student’s alcohol consumption patterns, history and related issues
- Session 2 provides personalized feedback based on screenings and a discussion about ways the student might reduce future health, social and legal risks
Payment
The 2-session program costs $150.00 for students who are mandated to attend. Should you elect to do a BASICS session, there is no fee.
