Independent Studio I – WIP

Works in Progress

Various projects begun during the Summer Intensive and Fall term.

Flag (Body Bag)
Because of the pandemic, I am not comfortable having a model come into my studio. So I constructed a US flag and created a maquette as a reference for this particular painting.

How the West Was Won, graphite on paper, 8×5 inches
Drape and chain placement
Experimenting with the drape of the flag around the figure

Cumulative Narrative/Mural Concept

This is a digital collage of several different drawings, grouped together by theme,  while considering narrative.

Cumulative Narrative Concepts (inspired by Dotty Attie)

This was the beginning of considering cumulative narrative and in looking at a lot of Dotty Attie’s work.

Summer/Fall Projects

“We’re All We Got”, oil on canvas, 24×18
An experiment in creating new “rules” for Indigenous flesh tones.

I learned how to paint at a school that was centered on the Western European ‘Academy’ model. There I learned that there were some rules about how to create dynamic flesh tones. These rules, however, were formulated with Caucasian skin in mind and don’t always work for POC. This past Summer and Fall, I’ve been experimenting with shifting these rules to accommodate various POC skin tones.

Additionally, my ongoing goal has been to de-center my practice by painting POC as subjects as well as painting LGBTQ themes. The original title for this painting was simply “Love” but as I moved through the layers, I began to consider how often LGBTQ people are shunned by family and friends – people who, essentially, should be there for them, no matter what. Which often means that their partners and close friends become their support system.

Prior Projects

Strictly speaking, these were started before Summer Intensive and don’t count but I continue to work on them.
