June 2020 Reviews This is an introduction to my work This is where I started the first of the Outrigger series in 2004. This was steel. The steel akas (horizontal bars) were fitted through holes attaching the amas or pontoons. The main hull is called the vaka. This is the Polynesian terms of the outrigger. This is a miniature wooden dugout like Trimaran. The wood in these series are charred and then painted and wiped. This is a hybrid of a toy boat and a wall sculpture made of wood, seine twine and paint This was part of the original series configured in wood These were the original series of sculptures of the outriggers combining wood, steel and paint This sculpture was part of a 2008 Massachusetts State Parks exhibit at The State House. I chose to do a protest piece about the Pilgrim Memorial State Park. This Kraken represents the slave ships that brought the Africans to America. The two boats the upper tentacles are holding; one is painted red, representing First Nations people, and the black boat represents the African slaves. The stone is smashing into them, landing on them. This piece introduced the idea of a chalice. It was a pivotal piece bridging the first series of outriggers to the second series of “Sowing the Seeds of Life” with chalices holding plants This was the second series adding plants. I varied the steel and wood forms, as well as the placement of the chalices. Is this a sculpture or is this a plant arrangement, floral piece? This is a wall sculpture with wood, steel and paint. This was part of the second series with chalices, “Sowing the Seeds of Life” This was with the second series with chalices made of steel and wood, painted This was part of the second series with two chalices This was part of the second series “Sowing the Seeds of Life” This was part of the “Sowing the Seeds of Life” Repousse forged copper foil leaves Steel limb with copper twigs and leaves made of copper foil This shows the scale of The Tree of Life.
