Lujah Brown

You teach me tree snaps echo

then pour me chamomile.

You danced courage into me.

                                      Use your gifts you said.

I didn’t mean to make you still.

You played me

loves expansive sound

an untraceable source.

                                    Until unconditional hearts beat lost.

We learned sometimes it’s not enough

to teach girls how to protect themselves.

I learned I’m not a fighter

but I can run and I can hide.

You poured forgiveness into a broken cup

                                    then poured me chamomile.

                                    Grace dances slowly home.
