Artist Statement:
The interplay of the “wrong side” and “right side” of fabrics is delineated in a geometric figurative puzzle. The lively and cozy life within the typical healthy body, intrinsically compared to the lack luster imitation of the Diabetic experience, is illustrated by the same cut cloth being presented in two different ways. High contrast in color as well as in fabric composition, wovens and knits are forced to work together, despite their structurally incompatible tensions and stretching capabilities. Top-applied bias ruffles embody femininity, while also adding additional physical weight to this already vulnerable lightweight jersey.
Sewn-on in the same fashion as buttons or bushels of sequins, these inconspicuously shiny adornments carry the weight of 750 finger pricks, in bundles of six– signifying the daily amount of testing needed. These lancets covering approximately four months of the incessantly dire and painful management for the Diabetic, are laying peacefully among the brushed and warm underside of their healthy bodied former self. Although the physical weight of the lancets compromises the movement and durability of its brushed jersey ground, they appear to misleadingly elevate their environment due to their luster and durability as objects within themselves.
This entire structure of this piece is sewn by hand, personifying the tediously habitual nature of managing Diabetes as an ongoing chronic condition.
