ANGELO MADSEN (previously known as Madsen Minax or Angelo Madsen Minax 2005-2024) is a multi-disciplinary artist, filmmaker, and educator. His projects consider how human relationships are woven through personal and collective histories, cultures, and kinships, with specific attention to subcultural experience, phenomenology, and the politics of desire. Madsen’s works have shown at Berlinale, Sundance, Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Tribeca, De La Warr Pavilion, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, REDCAT, Museum of Moving Image, Anthology Film Archives, British Film Institute, and dozens of documentary, LGBT, and experimental film festivals around the world. He is a Creative Capital Fellow (2025), a United States Artists Fellow (2023), a Guggenheim Fellow (2022), and has participated in residencies at Yaddo, MacDowell, Pioneer Works, Headlands, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and others. His film, “North By Current” (2021), aired on season 34 of POV (PBS), was nominated for an Independent Spirit award, and won the Cinema Eye Honors Spotlight award, Best Writing award from the IDA and numerous festival jury prizes. A New York Times Critics Pick, “North By Current” has been called “A beautiful, complex wonder of a film,” by Rolling Stone and “A titanic work” by Criterion. Madsen is currently releasing A Body To Live in (2025), about the world of body modification as documented through the lens of photographer and performance artist Fakir Musafar. Madsen is an Associate Professor of Time-Based Media at the University of Vermont and lives between Burlington, VT and New York, NY. His friends call him “Madsen.”

Madsen screened a series of shorts and the feature NORTH BY CURRENT and also conducted a master class with MassArt students.

The Roxbury International Film Festival is the largest festival in New England that celebrates people of color. Over the course of 10 days the festival screens all genres of films, holds workshops and panel discussions and offers filmmakers the opportunity to network with each other as well as audience members. Screenings take place at the Museum of Fine Arts, Haley House Bakery Café, Hibernian Hall, and other sites in and around Roxbury. The Roxbury International Film Festival is a competitive festival that awards certificates in the categories of Audience Favorite, Narrative Film, Documentary Film, Narrative Short, Documentary Short, Youth, Emerging Filmmaker Award and a special award named after award-winning filmmaker Henry Hampton. Our goal is simply to screen films that celebrate and present more diverse images of people around the world. 

For years, filmmakers, distributors, and film enthusiasts wondered why Boston, one of the largest metropolitan areas on the east coast, lacked a vehicle that supported independent films of color or that showcased diverse experiences of people of color throughout the world. The primary motivation behind the creation of The Roxbury International Film Festival (formerly known as the Dudley Film Festival) in 1999 was to provide this important opportunity. Started with a five thousand dollar grant to ACT Roxbury (no longer in existence) the film festival was born.

That was 25 years ago and our passion for film and filmmakers has sustained us all these years.  We are a Black, women-led and volunteer-run festival and we could not do this without the support of sponsors, filmmakers, and the audiences who appreciate these independent films – these incredible stories – as much as we do. Now as we enter our 26th year (2024), the Roxbury International Film Festival continues to showcase and honor the works of emerging filmmakers of color as well as established filmmakers, and has become the largest festival in New England dedicated to this genre. Since its inception, the festival has welcomed over 40,000 attendees, screening more than 750 films. Our mission is to support diverse filmmakers by providing an opportunity for audiences to view their works and experience the stories often overlooked in mainstream media.
