Thesis Abstract (First draft)

How can integrating unrelated/unexpected stimuli lead to creative solutions?

How can toys be used as a medium to channel self expression and individuality?

How can playing lead to developing creative thinking in users who don’t think they are creative?

How can we engage users in playful systems of thinking on a regular basis?

Creative individuals lead to a more flexible and resilient workforce and community. Encouraging creativity in children and nourishing it through adulthood leads to increased innovation in resolving complex issues. I aim to explore how certain structures, techniques, and theories in improv comedy can lead to a more creative routine in people of all ages. Along those same lines, I am interested in how embracing randomness and the unexpected can contribute to thinking more creatively. My research and projects explore these topics through the media of toys and games. I believe toys can serve us beyond entertainment; they can be objects for us to reframe how we think about the world. Most toys and types of play create a safe zone of heightened creativity and exploration, which can inject a sense of capability and confidence in participants. I hope to design interactions and objects that develop creative thinking, that serve as tools in building a versatile mind.
