Photos of My BLR 2019 installation.

My practice for many years has been black and white illustration. Comic books in particular. Yet I applied to Grad School as a painter as my recently completed (after a 30 year hiatus) undergraduate degree was in painting. I thought I might be exploring the “fine art” aspects of my skill-set at Mass Art more. That is not what happened.

I took off running and pool-hopped my way through every artistic back yard who’s fence was not too high for me to climb into dead end after dead end. I ended up coming back into comics and thought I would produce stories and actual comics as my Thesis work. I decided seconds before my review that I did not want do use certain intellectual properties as my Graduate work and jammed on the brakes.

When I picked myself up from where I had fallen flat on my face I had an idea. I had experimented with making metal plates in printmaking from black an white line art. I thought about the art of what I was doing on the comic book page. How I loved the marks and lines in black and white art.

Using those techniques and knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite I began to make cut-ups from my own comic book drawings. I enlarged, manipulated and duplicated fragments of line the into abstract forms. I chose to render down the literal imagery of my comic book illustrations into surrealistic forms.
