My work is a celebration of decay and renewal. It is an acknowledgement of the joy and grief that come with inhabiting a physical body in constant flux. Engaging physically and mindfully in repetitive and habitual activities allows me to connect with my materials and environment. Walking is at the heart of my practice and my being. Through walking, I create a meshwork, but I am also changed through my experiences. This exchange between my body, its processes and the places I inhabit forms the basis of my work. I translate this into three-dimensional forms that invite the viewer to contemplate their own connections to their bodies and their mortality.
Hair Accumulation: This project was made using daily drawings of my hair that was lost in the shower. The drawings were sewn together with thread and dental floss. Each form is a month of drawings.
Golden Rain Hair Pods: These forms were inspired by the Golden Rain Tree seed pods seen repeatedly on neighborhood walks.
Body Birch: This form was inspired by a Birch tree in my neighborhood. The hair was coated with acrylic paint. At the beginning of the month black paint was used; more and more white was added throughout the month. The paper forms were made by wrapping my fingers and thumbs with wire to create the structure.
Leaves and Seeds 2: This installation of paper cuts is based on drawings of the leaves and seeds collected on my many walks.
