While working on an animation my computer froze during a resize and the resulting image was so compelling that I snapped a photo with my cell phone. The cell phone image captured the grid of the computer screen. When enlarged and printed the images are further transformed by the dot matrix of the inkjet printer.
I found frames that incorporated layers of pixelation and the checkerboard of “transparent” background especially interesting.
As a way to take these translations a step further, I removed them from the digital realm completely by moving them through the filter of my eye and began to put paint to canvas. This project was a welcome diversion from the tediousness of animation and metalsmithing. I allowed myself to alternate between broad sweeping strokes and intricate lines, smooth flowing movements and quick machine-like rhythms.
I’m not sure if these works will come to fruition as part of my thesis, but I will return to them when I need to take a moment from the longer-term, slow-moving work that comprises most of my studio practice.
