Multi-Channel Video Proposal
“The old word bauen, which says that man is insofar as he dwells.”
Heidegger, Martin. “Building Dwelling Thinking”, Poetry, Language, Thought. translations and introduction by Albert Hofstadter. 1975
How are human beings shaped by how they dwell in the world? Human beingness is shaped by our actions here on earth. This language suggests that the human psyche and consciousness is something built, constructed, and even dwelled in.
In creating moving image of the construction of this home sculpture, the viewer is invited into the imagination, as if revisiting a location, but each time it is slightly altered. There is a disruption of continuous time, noted through the shift in natural light, weather, the growth of weaving materials around the playhouse. When we return again and again to this location, the house dangling from a tree, the viewer is invited to themselves to belong to dwelling. Viewers just with their presence, create the possibility of the sculpture being a dwelling. Belonging to dwelling isn’t just from the vantage point of a given structure–that only exists if it is inhabited and dwelled in.
I will create an outdoor woven sculpture that focuses on the subject of the home and domestic spaces, while also addressing ideas of the ephemeral, memory and nature.
I will be documenting the process of creating the sculpture outdoors in a single location (my backyard) over several shooting sessions. I hope to use multiple cameras. I also will be doing stop motion for one camera. My physical body and actions of weaving will not be the main feature. It will be focusing on the sculpture and its generation, passage of time.
About the sculpture: drawing directly from my studio practice this summer. I will be using home materials to create the sculpture and also introducing ready-made materials like toys and household items.
About the technical: I will be using a static camera. I will be using 3 channels. I will be using b-roll of sky/ backdrop nature during moments of needed absence.
I want to shoot with the 50mm and the 35mm again. I will use non-diegetic sound, most likely nature and locational sounds. I would like to have indoor house sounds too, not sure what they are yet.
The pace and narrative will unfold during the edit– I hope to not make it too progressive-non-linear BUT I will be influenced by intuition. The channels should flow into each other.

My current intention as an artist is to explore the subjects of domestic spaces through fiber sculptures and time-based media. My interest in the domestic, specifically in the space of home comes from a conflict and contention in personally trying to understand what that place means to me. Home is a place just like any other. It is subject to the changes of time, never staying the same. And yet it is a place fixed in time, as a location, a building, a physical structure that can outlast us. The home can be a private space, a delineation of external and internal, what is within the home and what is not becomes an extension of our psychology, what is within us and what is not. In my work I hope to create a place that is affected, non-archival, for the sculpture itself to become a type of dwelling through the presence of the maker and the viewer.
