REFLECTING ON STUDIO PRACTICES

Thinking about what it means to be an artist is sometimes difficult. Balancing our lives—day jobs, family, and all other responsibilities, is a challenge.

I found this article by Carol Bove to be super inspiring. I believe she has an amazing humility, and perspective on what “work” is. We need to give ourselves permission, make the space conceptually and physically!!

Over the summer, I saw Jill Magid’s film about architect Luis Barragán in the theater that blew my mind, and my perspective on what an installation/exhibition could be! I’m not sure how accessible it is now… but if you can get your hands on it, it’s worth it. Read what the New York Times had to say about it here.

  1. My Mother gave me the Artists’ Way Book in 1993 when I was 16 years old. I still have it, and remember the suggestion to journal out concerns or frustrations before beginning a creation process to clear the mind, which has been useful. Subtracting the word work in a description of what one is to do seems like a fantastic suggestion. I am aware that being an artist is not a good business plan, as I don’t think earlier generations of my family would have even allowed it as a career choice for their children. In bringing me up, I’m sure my parents saw it as an inevitability for me…
