MassArt Alumni Erin Robertson Fashion + Fibers ’16 and Christian Restrepo Fashion ’15 presented a body of work this month at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The Nasturtium Event was dedicated to the late street style photographer Bill Cummingham, who said that the Gardner was his spiritual home.
Together five pieces were presented inspired by the Museum and Isabella herself.

MassArt’s own Erin Robertson, Fashion + Fibers ’16 was one of Project Runway’s top 4 designers that got to create and share collections at NYFW this year!
We got to see Tim Gunn’s visit with Erin in her studio here at MassArt, and learn a bit about her process, and the inspiration behind her collection.
Erin’s multi-disciplinary, and her love of collaboration shined through her collection with hand made textiles, digital prints, embellishments, and fabric manipulations.
Friends, Faculty, and supports gathered together the night of the season finale to share in the celebration of Erin’s journey on Project Runway, view the debut of her collection on screen, and witness as Heidi Klum, and fellow Project Runway judges named Erin the winner of season 15!

MassArt’s Fashion Department completed their 3rd annual sustainable fashion collaboration with Eileen Fisher this month!
Eileen Fisher gave sustainable fashion design students from MassArt gently used garments from GREEN EILEEN as part of their coursework for the Sustainable Fashion class.
A reception was held on October 13th to showcase how tomorrow’s designers refashioned garments for a second life. Also featured in the presentation was the work of one of our first Eileen Fisher Sustainable Design Award recipients, Melissa Tilley (Alumna 2016). Melissa participated in the collaboration in 2014 and continued her focus in sustainable fashion throughout her senior thesis collection.

MassArt had the distinct honor of welcoming and hosting Stephen Burrows, Alva Chinn, & Pat Cleveland. Legendary designer and models who made history on November 28th, 1973 in the Palace of Versailles to raise money for its restoration. “The Battle of Versailles” as it came to be called showed five american designers – Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Anne Klein, Halston, and Stephen Burrows – and put them against the five French designers considered the best in the world: Yves Saint Laurent, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, and Marc Bohan of Christian Dior. It was not only the first time French and American designers were shown together but it smashed the glass ceiling loudly and irrevocably for ethnic models in high fashion across the globe.
The night hosted by MassArt started with reception in the DMC’s Fenway room followed by a screening of the film, directed by Deborah Riley. Afterwards a Panel Discussion moderated by Professor James Mason gave viewers a chance to hear from the director, designer, and models themselves as they relived the night of 73 and answered questions.
The following day Stephen came to visit the Fashion Department and toured the studios talked to students about their work, the business and how to stay motivated in the industry.

On Oct. 6th Paris Fashion Insitiue Director Joan White and Instructor Diane Pernet were in Boston to present Diane’s A Shaded View of Fashion Films at the MFA. The viewing show some of the film festival’s best pieces, for one hour guest were able to have an intimate viewing of the films with Diane, which was followed by a panel discussion and a Q&A where guest were able to ask Diane questions.
An iconic figure of the fashion industry, Paris-based Diane Pernet is known for her work as a journalist, critic, curator and talent scout. A pioneer of digital culture, she was the first blog of her kind, launched in 2005 her now-cult blog: A Shaded View on Fashion.

Last week the Fashion Department kicked off the semester with two exhibits in the Boston area.
The first was at the Saks Fifth Ave. in the Prudential Center, the opening reception was held last Thursday with some of Boston’s most fashionable at the event. Bubbly and music filled the 2nd floor of the massive shop as students mingled and talked about their pieces will the guest.
As well we have our Wearable Arts exhibit running in the Copley Place mall, this exhibit features the non-textiles our Juniors created in their Sophomore year!
Make sure to swing by the space in the next few weeks to see all the pieces and support your fellow fashion friends in the department!

Erin Robertson, MassArt graduate of 2016 will be one of 16 designers on the new season of Project Runway! Having double majored in Fashion and Fibers, Erin marries the two to create hand crafted, artisanal pieces that honors the old ways of couture but also look towards what the future of fashion could be. She creates her own original textiles by weaving her own yardage or manipulating preexisting fabrics.
Congratulations Erin! We are all rooting for you and very excited to see your journey on the show!

The Fashion Department offers a course that examines both the historical heritage of couture design as found through the textiles, techniques and craftsmanship of the designers as well as a contemporary view of the globalization of fashion and where designers are heading in the future. The course examines how the old world techniques continue to shape and work within the technological advancements of the present day. Students examine how Antwerp has surfaced as a leading innovative force in fashion and what this means in the larger global context. All of this is accomplished through lectures and coursework throughout the semester and will culminate with a 2 week travel program to Antwerp and Paris. Below are photos from our trip back in January of 2015 where the students got to visit legendary ateliers and mills such as Lesage, Legeron, and Prelle.
The Group!
Start the trip off with a stop in Amsterdam to visit the House of Denim, the group got to meet the students, faculty, and explore the new building of the House.
Then it’s off to Antwerp for lace making workshops, access to library archives, tech labs, a day trip to Bruges, and shopping!
Next off to Paris!
While in Paris the group visited museums, the library archive at The Louvre, designer concept shops , among many other things.

Below are photographs of our visit to the atelier of Legeron which was founded in 1727. Customers include prestigious fashion design houses and ready to wear like Dior, Givenchy, Céline, Dries Van Noten. While there the group gets to seeing all the runway pieces being created by hand. Silk flowers are hand cut, painted with recipes written out over 200 years ago, and sculpted. Yardage of fabric is pleated using pleating boards that are hundreds of years old.
While in France, the group take a day trip to Lyon to visit La Manufacture Prelle, the legendary mill that has been producing textiles since 1752. The group gets to see the old half of the mill where the original looms are still in use, contrasted with the modern technology they use today.
The group also spends an afternoon visiting Maison Lesage, whom since their creation in 1924 have been creating opulent embroidery requiring countless hours of work and exceptional skills for Haute Couture. While at Lesage the group takes a workshop that teaches them how to create embellished flowers and various hand beading techniques.
