DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Linda Swanson’s interests are rooted in the metamorphic nature of ceramic materials and processes.  She is particularly interested in how matter takes form and our perception of material over time.  Within the framework of installation and sculpture, she sets up situations in which matter can act according to its own tendencies.  Using processes inherent to fire, water, clay and glaze such as precipitation, evaporation, and dissolution, she explores how matter transforms as it changes states.  Her work engages the enigmatic properties of matter on an elemental level and the capacity of wonder to question how and what we know.Image Descriptions
1 Grotto 2009 salt, bentonite, plastic, metal  144”h x 240” x 48”A soda ash solution moves from liquid to solid dripping to coat a steel mesh form to a floor of powdered bentonite. Crystals form in the translucent sacs as the mesh is transformed from transparent to opaque.

3 Bentonite Ground (detail) 2005bentonite clay, steel, nylon, water  96”h x 192” x 48”A field of dry bentonite clay sifted onto a thin steel base absorbs water dripping from suspended nylon membrane. The clay expands to 15 times its own particle size appearing to grow. The bulging and cracking formations that relate physically and visually to formations in the larger landscape. Bentonite is linked to theories of the origin of life on earth.
